Books That Were Love At First Sight

5 Books I Just Had to Read

Have you ever seen a book in a store or online and instantly fall in love?! Immediately you had to have that book! You just had to read it! These are 5 books that once I saw them, I just had to have them!! They did not disappoint! These were all 5 star reads in my books!!

  1. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard — *****

“In school, we learned about the world before ours, about the angels and gods that lived in the sky, ruling the earth with kind and loving hands. Some say those are just stories, but I don’t believe that. The gods rule us still. They have come from the stars. And they are no longer kind.”

The world is divided by blood; if you have red blood, your normal and middle or lower class. If you have silver blood, you are the elite; you possess powers of the supernatural – power only the gods can wield.

This is how the world works; the Reds serve the Silvers. Mare Barrow is red-blooded – she does what she can to help her family survive. One day a twist of fate leads Mare in the audience of the Silver elite; her whole world is turned upside down when she exhibits abilities she did not know she had. It is a miracle; an anomaly – she has the powers of a Silver but her blood is red. To hide this irregularly, the king insists she spends her days as a lost Silver princess in his court, and betrothed to one of his sons. As Mare struggles to fit into her new life while hiding the colour of her blood, she risks even more by helping the Red rebellion, the Scarlet Guard, against the Silver elite.

Torn between loyalty and desire, the only certainty is betrayal.

Victoria Aveyard paints a very vivid picture of this beautiful fantasy world which has everything you could ever want. Once you finish the first book, you will definitely want to pick up the next.

This is one of my favorite series! I absolutely love this series. It has everything you want in a fantasy series. It has adventure, magic, romance, princes & princesses, and so much more. I haven’t read the final book in the series, War Storm, yet because I was not in the mood to read a 500+ read at the time! However, I feel like now I have to start from beginning to refresh my memory. Another thing I love about this series is how beautiful it looks as a set! I love how it gets darker and darker as it goes. (hint hint! No spoilers!)

2. Cinder by Marissa Meyers — *****

“Even in the future, the story begins with Once Upon A Time. . .”

Our story takes place in New Beijing where humans and androids co-exist. All is peaceful along the streets of the city, except when a strenuous strain of a deadly plague makes it way into the population. The planet of Lunar looks over the populations of Earth waiting to make their move. Earth’s only hope is in the hands of a sixteen-year-old girl. Cue our heroine of the hour!

Linh Cinder is a gifted mechanic with a mysterious past and a stepmother and stepsisters who could not care less about her as she does their bidding. One twist on this classic until-the-clock-strikes-midnight tale is she is part cyborg. The cause of an unfortunate accident when she was a young girl, that is suppressed from her memory, has resulted in making her part machine. Her life is thrust into whirlwind when her path crosses with the handsome Prince Kai. Now Cinder finds herself in the middle of an intergalactic struggle for dominance. In order to save Earth’s fate, Cinder must uncover the truth about her accident and her past. It is a race against the clock to uncover the truth because little does she know she holds the key to something that others would kill for.

Another series I absolutely LOVED!! I am a huge fan of fairy tales and fantasy; Once Upon A Time is one of my favourites shows! This series was a perfect fit for me. It’s the perfect blend of fairy tales and science fiction. If you take Star Wars and the Terminator, add a little Hunger Games, with a splash of the classic tales we all grew up with, you get the Lunar Chronicles.

You can already tell by the title of the first book that the story is a twisted version of Cinderella. If Cinderella was part cyborg. If you are looking for a good fantasy series and enjoy a little sci-fi, you will fall head over heels in love with this series. Once I started reading Cinder, I could not stop. I fell madly in love with the story, the characters, everything!!

3. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan — *****

Crazy love, crazy family, crazy friends, crazy rich!!

A typical tale of boy meets girl, they fall in love, boy takes girl home to meet his family and friends – but what if his family wasn’t your typical suburban, white picket fence family; what if his family was not just filthy rich, but crazy rich!!

I’m not leaving because I think I’m not enough – maybe for the first time in my life I know I am.” – Rachel Chu

There’s rich and filthy rich, and then there is crazy rich! This hilariously funny and entertaining read is about the goings-on of the richest families in all of Singapore. The young, highly-educated New York teacher, Rachel Chu decides to accompany her boyfriend to Singapore for the summer and as a guest to his best friend’s wedding. While also meeting his family for the first time, who she is told by her boyfriend is just your typical traditional Chinese family who is on the wealthy side of the spectrum. Little does she know that “wealthy” really means one of the richest families in all of Singapore. Nick Young definitely downplays the extent of his family’s wealth when they arrive at his childhood home, which is a palace!

Rachel learns that the wedding that she will be attending is not just any wedding. As it turns out, it is the wedding of the century. Not only does Rachel have to quickly become accustomed to the lives of the extremely wealthy and the fact that the love of her life is one of Singapore’s most eligible bachelors, she also has to appease Nick’s overbearing, protective, high society mother; whom is not so sure that Rachel is the best fit for her son. Is Rachel prepared to face the life of the crazy rich?! Is the love Rachel and Nick have for each other strong enough to surpass the high standards of his mother?! Rachel and Nick face more than just a summer of love and adventure in Singapore, they also face the trials of the love and what it truly means to love someone just enough to change your entire life.

4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky — *****

I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there.”

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is your typical coming-of-age story in high school. A heart-warming story of figuring out who you are and what holds for you in the future. The main character, Charlie writes letters to a friend in a diary which opens your eyes to all of the hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking events he’s had to go through in his young life. We may not know who he is writing to, but we know the story he shares and his view of the world is unique in its own design. As he goes through trials and error of dealing with family drama, making new friends, facing his past, first dates, first love, he finds himself at a crossroads of living his life and running from it.

Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in awhile you might miss it.” – Ferris Bueller

I absolutely love Charlie because I think I related so much to him; he’s an introvert, a book lover, a music lover and he is such a sweet and gentle soul you just have to love him! Charlie is very much an introvert; he doesn’t always know how to fit in. He is such a unique and delicate character. It is so interesting to see the world through his eyes. Charlie is not your average, everyday teenager. “The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, where all you need is the perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.”

This book is one of my favourites because once I started, I could not put it down!! I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I was glad I did.

5. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige — *****

If you love fairytales, fairytale retellings, or even retellings of some your favorite classic stories, then this is the book for you!

This is actually the first book in the series and my absolute favorite one! I think what gravitated me towards this book was that it was a twist on a beloved classic – The Wizard of Oz. Also, it was what would happen if Dorothy Gale found her way back to Oz! However, this time Dorothy grows power hungry and claimed all the magic for herself, and vows that since she is the savior of Oz, she is the one and only, the true ruler of the Great Land and all of its subjects. Little does Dorothy know that this time she is not the only one that was summoned to the Great Land of Oz via tornado. Another 16-year-old girl named Amy Gumm – the other girl from Kansas. She has one sole mission – to take down Dorothy once and for all.

“Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a yellow brick road – but even that’s crumbling.”

In Kansas, the tales of Dorothy Gale and her trusted dog Toto are well-known, but of course fictional. Life hasn’t been kind to Amy, seeing her father leave her and her mother when she was 8-years-old and married someone else, and her mother being an addict, forcing her to live in a trailer park. Her only true friend is a rat named Star. Her life changes once again when a tornado brings her entire trailer into the eye and takes her all the way to Oz. There, she learns that Oz is not what she has always known, but the lives of all its inhabitants depend on her.

My name is Amy Gumm – and I’m the other girl from Kansas. I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I’ve been trained to fight. And I have a mission.

REMOVE the Tin Woodman’s heart

STEAL the Scarecrow’s brain

TAKE the Lion’s Courage

And then –

Go check out this series! I definitely recommend it! And over the rainbow we go – again!

Thank you so much for reading my blog post! I hope you enjoyed reading it and I hope you go check out these books. I definitely recommend them!!
